History

Chikodi is part of Kannada Land from more than 1000 years. Chikodi was a major region in Ratt dynasty. Basti's (Vasati) in Examba (Eksambige), Pattankudi are prominant evidences in this regard. These areas had their valuable support towards cultural, linguistic, economical growth. Maratha rulers (Peshwas) acquired this area by 1776 with help of British. Every Language has its valuable Significance in human history. Kannada is mother tounge of the region, though we respect marathi. Kannidigas and Marathi speaking people are maintaining Brotherhood from several years. The act of placing the region in Maharashtra is politically motivated.

Chikodi has five entrances. One from Ankali side, second from Eksamba side, third from Sankeshwar side, fourth from chikodi road side and the main entrance is from Nippani side. In olden days there were only few kannada schools and the language largely spoken was marathi. Taluka school (primary school) was on the road towards Chikodi road. Chikodi's famous ODHA had the flowing clean water in olden days because there were no flush toilets throwing human waste in ODHA. People used to get water from KHANI behind Datta mandir or from a well of DAMBAL. Shortage of water was always there. The water pipe lines were laid down somewhere in 1970. R.D.High School was the only high school in the vicinity and students from khadaklat and other villages had to come for SSC exams to Chikodi. Later other high schools grew based on the linquistic differences. Convents / English medium schools were started after 1975. B. K college was having education only in arts, commerce and science streams and not like today. Some people say that the village belonged to Vantmurikar Desai Sarkar who is from Vantamure, but we never had any visible appearance of their family in Chikodi's day to day activities. State transport service was very rare. Most of the journey was through HALFTON and people used to travel even with sheeps and goats in HALFTON because the owner used to take them to load the vehicle full and get money. Chandrakori Gudda (Chandrakori Hill) was the main attraction of chikodi, later there appeared a Ganesh temple. Parati Nagappa and Ghatgi Basvanna were the famous fairs from olden days. People used to walk till these places, now they use vehicles. Dambal and Hampannavar were the rich and known families among the shop owners. The festivals of muslims were also equally celebrated by hindus like urs, tabut etc.

Chikodi has transformed now and we can say changed a lot and growing. But still the narrow roads and streets from the olden days remains the same. Some things have yet not changed for example water shortage although we had great politicians. Recently developement is seen aoround Chikodi but the original town remains the same. New upcoming buildings in the town have not changed the face of chikodi. Even the market place is the same what we saw 40 years back, shop keepers are same (only their children are seen at the counters now).

R. D high School is said to be the oldest educational institution in Chikodi and has biggest play ground in the town.

K.C road is the most famous road in the town, it accomodates most of the shops and can be said as commercial road. The most attractive part is the line of trees ( Hunashe Mar) besides the road.

Unfortunately Chikodi has no swimming pool until now and most people use wells for swimming and Kawalapure Bhavi is one of the famous among them which is located in Halatti and as it is private now its use is banned. We hope our town muncipalty will built swimming pool.
