About Chikodi

Chikodi is a small town in Belgaum District of Karnataka and is around 72 km north of Belgaum. It is located on State Highway 12 and 18.
Chikodi is a famous Jain pilgrim site in Karnataka.

History

Chikodi is part of Kannada Land from more than 1000 years. Chikodi was a major region in Ratt dynasty. Basti's (Vasati) in Examba (Eksambige), Pattankudi are prominant evidences in this regard. These areas had their valuable support towards cultural, linguistic,economical growth. Maratha rulers (Peshwas) acquired this area by 1776 with help of British. Every Language has its valuable Significance in human history. Kannada is mother tounge of the region, though we respect marathi. Kannidigas and Marathi speaking people are maintaining Brotherhood from several years.

Chikodi Taluka Profile

Chikkodi Taluka is located in North-Western part of Karnataka. The total Geographical area is 1,269.50 square kilometres. The Taluka is having 102 inhabited villages and hamlets with rural population of 561700 souls as per 2001 census. This is the second most populous taluka of Belgaum District. The taluka is bounded by Kolhapur District and Sangli District of Maharashtra. Out of Geographical area, 74% of the area is used for cultivation. Geographically the area is covered by Deccan Trap formation. The average Annual rainfall is 635 mm.

Culture

Chikodi has always had strong religious ties for Jains, Muslims, Christians and Hindus. It enjoys rich cultural diversity stemming from its proximity to the state of Maharashtra. Kannada and Marathi are the main languages spoken. The customs and traditions of Chikodi have been influenced by both the Kannada and Marathi cultures.

Economy

Despite having some agriculture related industries, Chikodi still has agriculture to support it’s economy.

Chikodi is an important location for vegetable trading, fish, wood & agricultural related trading in this part. Trade flourishes in Chikodi, and many areas of the city are dedicated to certain kinds of trade. For example, almost all automobile-related trade and repair happens in the ankali khoot area of the town. The guruwarpeth area is known as the wholesale market which sells commodities like grains, tea, etc..

Climate

Chikodi is well known for its pleasant climate throughout the year, but the last few years, summers (April through June) have been warmer than usual. It is at its coldest in winter (November through February), and experiences continuous monsoon of medium intensity during July to September. The annual average rainfall is 50".

Food

Chikodi's positioning has also made its cuisine a pot-pourri of central (Marathi) and North Indian flavours and the fast food is predominantly influenced by Marathi tastes (e.g. vada pav, meesal, sangeet etc.) and other North Indian chaat.
